About the Authors

JoAnn Harris-Bowlsbey, Ed.D.

Dr. Bowlsbey has had a long and varied career with positions that include being a high school counselor, high school director of guidance, university professor, counselor in a university counseling center, developer of computer-based career planning systems, and Executive Director of ACT’s Educational Technology Center. She has recently worked as a consultant to Nippon Manpower, Inc., a Japanese corporation that is promoting the training of career development advisors in Japan, and has written the curriculum for that training program. Dr. Bowlsbey is now vice president and senior consultant with the Career Development Leadership Alliance; she is also a senior consultant with National Career Assessment Services, Inc. Among her many publications, Dr. Bowlsbey is the author of Take Hold of Your Future, a college-level career planning curriculum and coauthor of Career Interventions in the 21st Century, a textbook for the training of counselors. Dr. Bowlsbey has held many positions in NCDA, including president, and is a recipient of its Eminent Career Award.

Barbara H. Suddarth, Ph.D.

Dr. Suddarth is a psychologist and National Certified Career Counselor (NCCC) who practices in Silver Spring, Maryland. In addition, Dr. Suddarth is the Executive Director of the Career Development Leadership Alliance, Inc. (CDLA). After earning a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Penn State University, she completed the two-year Clinical Program on Psychotherapy Practice at the Washington School of Psychiatry. She has taught graduate-level courses on helping skills at the University of Maryland at College Park and Penn State University, as well as graduate courses in career development as a faculty associate at the Johns Hopkins University. In addition to her psychotherapy and career development practice, Dr. Suddarth serves as a senior counselor and program advisor in coordinating the nationwide Career Management Program of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation through CDLA. She has also provided training and consultation to such organizations as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the National Institute of Corrections.

David M. Reile, Ph.D.

Dr. Reile is a psychologist and National Certified Career Counselor with over 15 years of education and experience in career planning and psychological consultation. Dr. Reile is the managing director of the Career Development Leadership Alliance, Inc., and, in this role, administers a nationwide career coaching service for the Transportation Security Administration. He is an adjunct faculty member at Loyola College in Maryland and has also taught career development courses at the University of Maryland, College Park and at the Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Reile is a published expert in the use of the Internet in career planning and has presented at numerous conferences of the National Career Development Association, the International Association for Educational and Vocational Guidance, and state and regional career development organizations. Dr. Reile focuses his private practice in Silver Spring, Maryland, on organizational and individual career development.
